Early Style Cupboard Tutorial

Hi Prim girls,

I called this piece "Early Style Cupboard".

Few days ago, I made several drawings to design a new wood piece. One of my favorite drawings was this cupboard. It had simple lines but in my mind this piece looks beautiful. My husband and I worked in this piece together, and these are the steps that we followed to make this cupboard.

This cupboard is the biggest piece that we made and only spend $32.45 in materials.

You'll need the following:

  • Wood
    • piece of 1" x 12" x 4'  board
    • 2 pieces of 1" x10" x 6' board
    • piece of 3/4" x 3" x 6' board
    • piece of plywood of 24"x24"
    • piece of 3/4" x 24"x 24"
  • 1" metal hinges (2)
  • wooden knob (1)
  • 2 cans of black paint
  • wood glue
  • sander
  • gig saw
  • Stain
  • nails
  • screwdriver  and screws

Procedure:
Take the 1x10 boards and cut 2 pieces of 49" long. You will obtain two remain pieces of 23", they will be your shelves.  In one edge of the larger piece, measure 2" to inside and mark each point. Now, measure 5" from the bottom of the piece to the top and mark that point.  Using this point, in the center of the board, draw a horizontal line of 2 1/2".  From the edges of that line connect the previous points in the bottom. See picture for reference.

Make the same in the next piece and cut them with a jig saw. Now your cupboard legs will look like this.

In both cupboard sides ( legs)  mark the lines to place the shelves. For the first shelf measure 15" since the bottom of the piece,  draw a line, in that point place your first shelf.  Using this shelf as reference, measure 11" to the top and place your second shelf.

Assemble your pieces together, secure them with glue and nails.  See picture below.

Now, take your 3/4" x 3" board  to make a supporting piece to the cupboard. Measure a board of 23" long.  Place it between the sides of the piece like that.

Take your 1x12 board, cut a piece of 28 1/2"long . This piece will be the top of your cupboard. With the remain piece of 3/4" board, cut two pieces of 21"L x 2 1/2"w. Use them to make the front sides of this cupboard. Secure both pieces in the front of the piece.

Now, cut one piece of 18"L x 2"w for the top of the front. Place that piece between side pieces like you see in the pictures below. For the back of the cupboard, using your plywood piece cut a square of  21 1/2" x 24". Secure it with nails.  Make a door with the board of 3/4" x 24" x 24", measure a square of 19 1/4"x 17 3/8".  If necessary,  sand the edges to adjust the door with the hinges. Now, place metal hinges to secure it on front.

Your piece is almost done. Put a door knob in place and cut a little piece of wood to close the door. Secure both pieces using screws.   Round the edges and make sure that all sanding has been completed before your first coat of paint. For mine, I used black paint. Painted and let it dry.

To give a worn look, use the sander and remove paint in specific areas.

Then apply stain, remove the excess with a old cloth.  Now your primitive piece is finished and looks old and beautiful.

Love my new Early Style Cupboard!

I hope you enjoy it.
Bye, bye and see you soon... Evelyn

  22. Thank you girls! Your comments are much appreciated. I enjoy so much making a wood piece, but more trying to make an easy tutorial to share with you. I made dolls and in some occasions I bought patterns and when I received them noticed that are not easy to follow. By the end, I use only the sketch and make the doll from my own perspective and only following the picture.
