Antique, Old or Collectibles Challenge

Hi Prim Girls,

Certainly, I started this post few days ago but I am not finish it because I'm doing others things at the same time: like "potty training" my new ~~puppy~~, I mean"new baby", take away Christmas decor, early Spring cleaning, etc..

This post is about my love for old things, sometimes I think I'm a "old soul" living in a wrong era. I think that my love for antique or collectibles pieces started when I have almost 7 yrs old. One of my great grandmother had a old pewter mirror in her purse, and I remembered her looking in it and check how she looked before going out. At that age always thought if she would gave me the precious mirror, I never saw one liked since she pass away. I never knew who inherited it, well there many daughters and dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren, so my chance was none, LOL. But few days ago in an antique store, I found a similar and reminded me my childhood and my lovely great grandma, she was a beautiful lady, tall, slim ( although she had 14 kids), elegant and well mannered. That mirror looks like this.....

Having old or antique pieces makes me think in those who cared and loved them, or how much time they survived and now have the privilege of having them with me. You know what I mean, every one of us has inherited something or have something you love not necessarily for the monetary value if not for the sentimental one.

Now, I am inviting you to join me in this challenge and share your loved Antique, Old and Collectible Item. Since, I am not an expert in this field, just trust in the knowledge of the antique dealer or the antiquarian that identify the piece.

Hand painted portrait of my beloved grandma ( She died at the age of 92, this was painted when she had 17, so 75yrs count for a old piece, right)

Today, a friend of us post about an email that she received about their antiques. All of us know that ...

" An antique (Latin: antiquus; old) is an old collectible item. It is collected or desirable because of its age (at least 100 years old), beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society. Collectibles are, generally speaking, the possible antiques of the future and generally less than 100 years old."

No matter if our things are 50, 80, 100 years or more, whom affects to say antique, old or collectible. It is important the value and care we give beyond the age or where they come. Let's be courteous to others and respect others' homes. Not everyone has the purchasing power for antiques, not because we do not like but because we may need to set priorities that go beyond our tastes. Let us show what we have with pride no matter who you love and who not.

Primitive Silent Auction from a blogging friend

You have been seeing this post in other blogs since yesterday.

Traci from York Mountain Primitives

Handmade make do prairie doll. She is OOAK item, no pattern was used on it.

She is mounted in a old spool.

Her body and clothes are made of muslin that had been stained in a grungy mix to give her an old appearance. In her hands ( made of wooden sticks) she holds a crow and had a tag that shows " 1812" .

Her face is pencil drawn, she is so sweet.

Urgent: I need a prayer for my nephew

Hi Prim Girls,

I am asking for a prayer for my nephew. Today, I received a call from my family telling me that my nephew got an MRI on Tuesday and the doctors founded a brain tumor. They set a complicated emergency surgery for tomorrow at noon. His name is Jose and he is only 14 years old. I believe in prayers, please if you have time today make a prayer for him.

In a happy note, last week I won two giveaways. First one is from Jennie Lynn from Appleseed Prim . She was hosting a giveaway in honor of her First Blog Anniversary, I won her partridge and pear giveaway. This is her own creation and she did an amazing job on it. It is in antique white and the pear was covered with cinnamon. She is an awesome artist, her work is so beautiful.

Also, she send me a cutest angel. I loved prim angels. I believe in angels and I think that they are always watching us.

Christmas pictures - Part 1

Hi Prim Girls,

I loved Christmas time and would like to decorate simple and elegant, with a colonial feel. You know what I mean with the minimum possible decoration, just a touch here and there. But when you have children you have to decorate for them too and make the Christmas a little fun and cheerful for them. I try to balance my tastes and their preferences, although I always use white lights in my trees, I tried to put color in the decoration through the house. I am not finished yet but here some pictures...

I know, already put a lot of pictures but who of us does not like to see pictures, LOL. I hope you enjoyed them.

Hi Prim Girls,
While I was spending the Holiday with my brother and family, this huge box arrived to my home... yes, my swap goodies from Christina from Old Thyme Primitives. We are partners in recent swap that Amy's host in her blog. Christina spoiled me with amazing things. We exchange emails during this swap and she is very sweet person, pleasant, but I never imagined the extent of her generosity.

I had to make this post few days ago but I was feeling so bad with cold. I received an email from Carol from Buttermilk Creek Farm with an amazing surprise for me.. I was one of the three winners that she have in her giveaway. I won the first giveaway which was the most cutest snowman that I have ever seen.

I am not kidding and I am not exaggerating, he is extremely beautiful. He is full of details, my words do not do justice. I was ecstatic watching him. Who wants to adopt me?

Hi Prim Girls,

Who wants to give a roof this Christmas to this "old tired Santa" ?Are you ready to adopt? If you are, please join this giveaway. I will only have this running for a week so after Thanksgiving weekend he will be on the way to your home. Sounds good, Ahhh..

This make do is a OOAK Item. No pattern was used on it. He is made of stained muslin, his clothes are flannel that had been stained and baked with a grungy mix to give them an old appearance. Santa's face is handculpted and stitched. His brows, mustache and beard are wool.His hands are wood sticks. He holds a prim sheep and a grungy tag that says " O'l St. Nick". The pictures don't do justice, looks better in person.

Usually in this season I have giveaways for my followers only but this year I will share this with anyone who wants to participate.

OLM Swap Goodies

Hi Prim Girls,

This weekend I received a box that I was waiting to start my Christmas decorations. Few weeks ago, I participated in the awesome swap that Marie from Primitives by Olde Lady Morgan was hosting. She plans a fun swap where the same amount of ornies you sent was the same that would receive. I choose the maximum set... six, and this is what I received, six wonderful ornies.

First, the most gorgeous primitive snowman, a gift from Marie-OLM. I want to confess something, Marie posted a picture of the boxes that she received for this swap, and I could see this little snowman in that picture. I wanted it and I wish to receive one. The power of the mind is great because to my surprise was the first gift that I found in the box.

Marie include in the box, a bag with chocolate kisses and a beautiful tag.

Next, the cutest mitten that I ever seen, it was made by Karen from My Colonial Home. This is the first time that I see her work and it is really perfect, top quality details, simply amazing work.

Also, the her gift had this tag that I used in my tree too.

The third ornie in the box was this beautiful gingerbread man. Prim perfect! It was made by Becky from Primitives n Stitchin.

Now, this precious salt dough glittery snowman face. It was a creation of Rachel from Some where in the middle. Do you think is cute? Believe me it is.

From Carmen and the Primcats I received three lovely candy canes like this. Made with a beautiful fabric and adorned with cheese cloth and sweet annie.

And the last, was this adorable blackened beeswax ornament.... a Santa's head. It smells awesome, really good. It was a creation of Amy from Bumble bee lane cottage.

I want to say THANK YOU to Marie for hosting this swap and the Blogland girls for sharing your talents and creations with me. Love them! They are now proudly displayed in my LR Christmas trees with the handmade creations of other blogland friends.

The Santa for my Giveaway is finished. I think it looks so old and primitive. I will be making the post about him this week.

Door Box Tutorial and my New Giveaway

Hi Prim Girls,

I have been seeing this door box in some colonial homes, blogs and magazines and I decide to make one for my front door. I loved to make wood pieces. I'm very pleased how this box turned out, so I decide to share with you my last tutorial. I received emails from blog ladies that are using my tutorials to make their own pieces and that is amazing for me. Try this new one and enjoy making it!

You'll need the following materials:

1 piece of 1" x 12" x 4' wood board

1 piece of 1" x 3 1/2" x 4' wood board

nails and hammer

wood glue

sander

table and/or gig saw

Paints ( I used black and antique cream)

Stain

Drill, screws ( if necessary)

Procedure:

Using a piece of 1x12, measure and mark 28" long in the board. In one side of the piece, measure 3 1/2" from the edges to inside and mark each points. Using the same side of the piece, measure 4" from the top to the bottom and mark points in each side. Connect the points from the edges and draw a semi circle. Cut the semi circles. Your board top will look like this.

Using the same board, measure the front piece of the box, using the bottom of the board mark 12" long like this...

Cut both pieces to obtain the back and the front of the box. Then using the 3 1/2" board measure 2 pieces of 12" and one of 10", cut them to make the sides and the bottom of the box. Make adjustments if necessary. You box will look like this...

We are ready to make the box. Secure the sides of the box to the front piece before attach it to the back. Now, attach the box to the back piece. Remember, use glue and nail to secure each piece to give strength to it. Look how it looks with all pieces together.

Your piece is finished, now start with the fun part... Paint. Round the edges and make sure all sanding has been completed prior to painting. Give the base color and then apply the color you want ( I used a light color in mine because my front door is barn red). In this piece, I used antique cream over black ( base). To give a distressed look, use the sander and remove paint in the specific areas to create a worn appearance. Then apply stain. Now your piece looks worn and old. Primitive perfect!

Decorate the box following the trends of the season.

Attach it to the door and enjoy it for the next seasons...

Ditty Bag Tutorial

Hi Prim Friends,

Few days ago, I participated in the Prairie Swap that Amy from Bumble Bee Lane Cottage was hosting in her blog and I sent her this Prairie Ditty Bag as part of my gifts. Also, you can see pictures of it in her swap post ( link above).

Well, I decided to prepare a new tutorial of it with a little change ... a different doll. I want to share with you this easy tutorial, I named it Christmas Ditty Bag but through the pictures you will notice that it can be used for other seasons as well.

It is a simple ditty bag but with a little of imagination, you will used during whole year. Also, It will be an awesome gift for your prim friends this Christmas.

Materials:

Fabrics - I used 3 different.

First Muslin - Cut a piece of fabric of 20" by 7 1/2" for the bag. Another piece for the little doll, 4 1/2"by 7". I used Muslin for this project but you can use a osnaburg or a printed calico as well.
Second - Beautiful stripe fabric in light cinnamon and beige color. Cut a piece 5 1/2" by 4 1/2 ". This will be used for a little pocket.
Third - Brown wool, I will used this for the clothes.

Coffee and Cinnamon ( For staining purposes)
Embroidery floss ( Cinnamon, Black and White)
Acrylic Paint - Black
Wool ( I used real sheep wool ), Felting needles.
Sewing Machine, of course
Jute
Polyfill
Strip of flannel
Berries
Sweet Annie

Procedure:

To make the bag, fold fabric in half then sew 3 of the sides of it leaving one side open.

Now we are ready to make the hem. Fold the open side about 3/4", stitch it leaving about 1/2"open in a side.

Now you need to stitch the little pocket on the bag.

Your ditty bag will look like this.

Stained your bag with the coffee and dry it. I put mine in the oven to give a grungy appearance. Monitors the bag to avoid burning it in the oven while you can sew the Santa.

When your bag is dry, slide the jute through the hem to close the bag. Using the little piece of muslin for the body, cut it in half. Fold and cut roundly on top.

Sew and sculpt Santa's nose.

Paint the whole body with black paint, bake, sanded, give a coat of stained and bake it again. Once it is dry stitch the eyes using white and black floss. Using a felting needle attached the beard and mustache.( if you do not have one, stitch them). Now your Santa is ready for clothes, cut a square piece of brown wool, put them around the body to adjust the size. Cut 2 long triangles, used them to make the hat. Sew them. Using a strip of brown flannel attached it the rope and the hat. Dress your Santa stump doll, he will looks like this....

Now put it in the pocket and enjoy your Christmas Ditty Bag. See pictures below.

If you make the ditty bag in a neutral color like mine, you can used it around the year. See more photos with ideas on how to use it during the year.

Thrift Find Makeover

Hi Prim girls ,
Let me share with you this oak hutch makeover. Few weeks ago, I founded this piece in a TS , it was in good condition but still leave it as it cost $65 and that day I had no money to spend in a piece like that. Many think like $65 is not a big number, but for a piece that is not necessary to live, I sometimes think twice to buy it. Still, after I left the store, I kept thinking that the piece had potential . So come back again, and asked the manager if she can accept a deposit to hold the piece and I will pick it up by the end of the week. She replied that they can not accept deposits but as she knew that I was client there, she will put the piece hold up to Friday. Then she told me, if I changed my mind, please call her to put back the piece to the marked, how cool is that. She was so nice with me.

She told me that she going to put a higher price to the hutch, but had an accident with the glass, so it made the price down from $200 to $65.

I think the economy is affecting prices in the TS too, now everything is high. Sometimes, I have to look twice to see if entering in an antique store instead of TS, LOL. Well, we removed the doors, sanded and added a piece at top to match one in the bottom.

I choose to do it in two colors, inside off white and outside in black, distressed a little bit and stained the piece. Now, it is displaying my redware pieces. Love how it looks now.

You think that my pieces looks better with the white background? I think they look better against the white. I have my redware in other hutch before and this is the last background ( see below) . The pieces were lost in that color and I wanted to stand out and so chose a light color.

Notforgotten Farm Show

Hi Prim Girls,

Being a while since I went to a fall show, but this Saturday I went to a wonderful. Since Lori posted about it, I was looking forward this day.

For all of us being in a fall show is awesome but for children can be boring... I say unless if the show is in Toys R Us, LOL. Normally, my kids are in a hurry and all the time asking if we leave, but I have to say that this show was the exception. Not only was a gorgeous fall show for me but for my children too.
Lori brought together talented artisans there, had so many beutiful things that I don't know what to choose. Just needed a lot of money to take at least one thing of each booth, Ha, Ha, Ha. I promise to do my piggy bank for the next show. LOL.

WARNING!!!!!!!

This is long post, lots of pictures, take a cup of coffee and enjoy it.

And this is the reason why my children were excited about the show: Lori's farm animals. She and Peter,her husband, were very friendly and kind with my kids, they allowed children to be near the animals. Even her husband came to the Lori's shop to invite the kids to see the sheeps and the peacocks closely.

These are the faces of my children after the show, priceless. They now ask if we can come back for the Christmas Open House. I hope to be there too.

Thanks Lori for such a wonderful show and your husband for a gift to my kid, peacock feathers. He put them in one of my jugs.

Kindred Spirit Doll Swap Packages

Hi Prim girls,

Few weeks ago, Amy’s from Bumble Bee Lane had a new swap in her blog, Kindred Spirit Doll. I participated and it was so amazing because I had two partners in it. That means to new dollies for my collection. My partners were Maurine from Stitchins Prims Blog, and a sweet gal named Theresa. Currently, she hasn’t a blog but she is very talented and makes gorgeous dolls, go her Etsy Shop and see her creations.

I loved dolls, although I can make them I loved to have dolls from other artisans as well. In the past I won a giveaway from Maurine, and I was pretty sure that anything from her will be beautiful and do not mistake me when I saw my doll. My new black doll came in a middle of the Hurricane, you read correctly, I received her when Hurricane Irene hit us, so I named her Irene. Thanks GOD the hurricane did not affect us directly except for some tree branches down, I came from the Caribbean and knowing the forces of the hurricane like that I was worried about what could happens with the strong winds that Irene had. But when I saw the box in my porch and opened it I have a feeling that everything will be OK , if she came in the middle of the Hurricane everything will be fine.

She is an AWESOME prairie faceless doll with and old key in her chest. Now, she is proudly sat in my living room and I love it! Thanks Maurine.

When participating in a swap always read my partner’s blog to get a better idea of their tastes to make sure you like my gift. It’s a bit difficult when there is no blog. With Theresa exchanged emails and check her store to have an idea of her taste , she loved Halloween things. Amy ask us to share pictures of what we send to gals who had no blog. I included three items in her package...

This beautiful Witch, it is an OOAK item , she is my own creation and no pattern was used. Made in stained osnaburg and her dress is painted osnaburg. Her face is sculpted, stitched and colored painted.She has a broom and a spell book .Ready for October 31.

A lovely black cat, a stump Kandy Kat. Made of painted and stained osnaburg, his eyes are mismatched buttons, nose is sculpted and his whiskers are rusted wire.

In a primitive shop here, I founded this awesome tarts that smells so good. I included them in my last giveaway but I decided to send a package to Theresa too. Hope she enjoy them.

Last week, I received the second swap package, it came from Theresa. This came in one of my worst days of my life then I think it comes with a strong message from GOD to me. She spoiled me with this.

The main requirement of this swap was a 10”doll but she send to me the most cutie prairie doll, she is amazing and I called her FAITH,

and a wonderful Thankful pinkeep.

I was static and could not believe such generosity. BIG, BIG Thank you , Theresa. I loved them!

Halloween Spell Book Tutorial

Hi Prim Girls,

If you remembered in my giveaway post, I mentioned that I will be adding more items, one of them is a Halloween Spell Book. Yeah, I know that was a long time since I shared a Tutorial in my blog, well, I decide to make a new tutorial and show you the steps that I followed to make my book.

Steps :
* Use the cheaper book that you could find. ( Mine is a 10 cents Thrift Store book)

* Sanded a little bit and then give a base coat, I painted it black.

* Give a second coat of paint, I choosed a mix of Barn red, Light Cinnamon and Country Tan. Apply them randomly using an old sock.

* Once it is completely dry, sanded again to give a worn look.

* Now use an ink pad, tags and alphabet stamp set.... make your own book tittle. ( You can hand paint it if you want, be creative)

* Then give the final touches to your Halloween Spell Book, I added a drawing, attached the tag, stained and to give an old look you can used cinnamon rubbed in ( not only looks old but smells good too)

* Now, your book is ready for display it....

Her face is hand stitched . She is completely stained with a grungy mix of coffee and cinnamon, she smells so good. Her dress and bonnet are made with blue thicking and reproduction fabrics.

She is holding a big pumpkin. One side have a Jack O'lantern face and the other side is plain, so you can change it and use it during the complete season.

I am back again...

Hi Prim Girls,

It’s been a long time since I've shared with you. WOW, seems that it is the first time that I blog or make a post, I almost forgot how to make it! First of all , I want to apologize all of my blogging friends for my absence during the past months but this was a hard time for me. Since then, I have moving, loss of family members, medical treatments, sadness and depression, you name it and I probably had it...LOL. Now, I am feeling better or should say I'm made some improvements each day.

Normally, I don't share things like this in my blog, because I know that everyone has situations and sometimes use the blog to escape from their sadness and not to read about others. Please, don't understand me wrong, I laughed a lot, cried and prayed so much for "blogging friends", people that I’ve never known in my life but they have situations that touch my heart in many ways... you know what I am talking about. But I always use my blog to share tutorials, "thrifting" and home decor pictures and give you a happy note. I am happy and glad to return again to the "Blog land"!

In another note....I don't know if you have been a copy of the A Primitive Place and Country Journal in your hands, but girls, it is an AMAZING magazine. Well constructed, structured and defined, with awesome pictures and great writings... it is a most in our magazine collections. I received my subscription starting this summer but when I try to buy the past issues they only have the spring. Unfortunately, I missed two... fall and winter. Please, if you know if someone or a store that has them for sale, let me know. If you don't have it, hurry up and go now to APP Magazine.

First of all, I want to wish you all that this year 2011 comes to you full of blessings.

Also, I want to share with you that I won a giveaway in the fall but due to I didn't blog so much I didn't know about it. On January 1st, I visited my blog and noticed a message from Ann from A hole in the basket primitives telling me that I was the winner of her giveaway and she was holding my goodies waiting for my response. Do you believe that? I was the winner and I didn't know about it but her giveaway was waiting for me for about 3 months. Yes, you read correctly 3 months. I think that this was a good signal, that this year will be a better year. I'm acting like a crazy woman reading all her posts until I found the giveaway post to see my new goodies, Ha, Ha, Ha.... I was so excited and happy to see them. Inmediately, I contacted her (That was the first email that I send on 2011) and she send my new goodies this week. THANK YOU!!!!

Yes girls, I missed my own giveaway.... Do you believe that?

On April 22 from last year I made my first post. It has been a year since that and of now I have 296 followers. I never in my dreams imagine that but is true. To my followers, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!! In the Spring of 2009, I found an article in Mercantile Gatherings Magazine, that catch my eye with a house that have a beautiful decor in Colonial style. In that article, the owner mentioned her Blog and as of today it is one of my favorites.... Behind my Red Door. Thank you MG and Linda... both of you open a new world for me, LOL. My latest finds

Hi prim girls,

Probably and because we are in the perfect season for yard and garage sales, the good donations in our town are very slow. But this week the story was different, I was in the TS and when I saw this pipe box at the top of the rack, it looks nice at the distance but when I put it in my hands looks much better, LOL, it was in nice condition. After I grab my finding and searching more, I can not believe what my eyes are seeing, I found 5 clay pipes, 3 of them in perfect condition. They are at $3 , not too bad at all. But when I was paying for it, I asked to the cashier if they are $3ea and she said, I think this price was too high, Did you accept $1 ea?. WOOHOO. I obtain my pipe box and pipes for a grand total of $6.00. Well, this was my best finding of this month.

Also, I found these wooden bowls for $1.50 and $1.25 respectively and the little basket for 50 cents.

And my little son is well trained to find awesome things, LOL. He said, "Mommy look this", and when I turned around he has this pewter beauty in his hands. Great find for a 4yrs old kid.

Finally for a total of $ 8.90, I found this wooden items and now I am woking with their makeovers.

Craiglist, eBay and more

Hi Prim girls,

I want to share with you some items that I won or found recently in Craig list, eBay, Antique stores or in the TS. Few weeks ago, I won this rug on eBay and I love the color in this piece. It is beautiful piece and the artist made a great job on it.

In Craiglist, I found this awesome windsor rocking chair for $20. Great!! The chair is beautiful and has a great patina on it.

Also, in my favorite TS I found this very old iron candle holder for $2.00.Not to bad.

On Saturday, we were in an antique store in Hanover, VA and found this set of windsor chairs ( I think this style is called Comb Back), if I am wrong, please, let me know. They are listed for $50 ea but the owner gave us the set for $65.00. I think that we make a great deal. What do you think? They are completely sturdy and in excellent condition. I love it!

They are similar to others that my friend gave me a few months ago. This antique set had more than 104 yrs.

I will make changes very soon in my dining room and these chairs are the perfect combination.

Now moving to bargains, LOL. Well, speaking of great deals in the TS , I can't pass these items today. First, I found this....

Only spent $4.25 and the old Bibble was free. In the next TS, I found a wing back chair for $10.00 and two games boards for $3. A handmade basket for 5o cents,

And last but not least, these are two gifts that my Best Friend Anitza from Victorian Country sent me with my family last week. A beautiful shower curtain from Park Designs (Sturdbridge in Black/Tan color) and a Stitchery.WOOHOO! Thank you, Thank you Anitza.

Mary Washington House

Hi Prim girls,
During this spring break, I take time with my family to see some historical places here in Fredericksburg, VA. One of them was the house of Mary Ball Washington, mother of our first President George Washington. He purchase this home in 1772 for his mother, and she spent her last 17 yrs in this home. The President-to-be came to this home to receive his mother's blessing before attending his inauguration in 1789.

It is a beautiful place and some of her possesions are on view in this house, including a mirror that she called her "best dressing glass". No pictures are permitted inside the house but you can take awesome pictures from the gardens and outside kitchen. See below..

A trip to Amish Village , Lancaster PA

Hi Prim girls,

Last week my brother and family came on vacation to stay with me for a week. We visited some historical places here in VA, DC and Pennsylvania. It was their first visit since we moved to VA and I want to share with them some places that I enjoyed in the area. When I visited PA for the first time in 2006 , my cousin showed me Lancaster Area and The Amish Village and I loved that place. The area had the most beautiful lands that I see in my entire life. And I want to give my nieces the same experience that I had 4 years ago when I see the Amish people for the first time. For me, it was a remarkable experience in my life. In that trip I realize that we can live with less that I had and be extremely happy as well.

I admire how the Amish live a simple life, making their chores without modern conveniences and they live happy and grateful with the things that they had.

And we are living pending the electricity, cars, cable, phones, specific brands and our kids pending of electronic games, internet, cel phones and things like that and sometimes we think that our world is finishing when we did not had one of them. We need to learn so much from them. If we live simple life less prejudice we will have. My admiration and respect for them.

In The Amish Village, they make an effort to show us the authentic detail of the everyday life of this gentle people. House dates back to 1840 furnished with authentic Amish furniture and things like crocks, quilts, clothes, etc. In the village you will find a Spring house, Operating smokehouse, Blacksmith shop, Schoolhouse, Livestock, Windmill Operating Water wheel and gift shops.

If you are planning a trip to Lancaster you need to see this place. I will leave you with this though that I found in the Schoolhouse.....

A New Tutorial....... Bucket Table

Hi Prim Girls,

We enjoy making wood pieces so much, but was not easy to be working in the garage with the low temps that we had this winter. Thanks God that Spring is around the corner... Love it! It means more furniture pieces for my home. We have better temps this week, perfect to start a new wood project and this is my new piece. I am very pleased with it and decide to share with you a new tutorial..... a Bucket Table. I see that some prim gals are using my tutorials to make their own pieces and that is awesome for me. I am not a carpenter but I enjoy so much creating this tutorial for you. Try it!

You'll need the following materials:

2 pieces of 1" x 12" x 6' wood board
wood panel of 1/4"
wood nails
wood glue
sander
table or gig saw
Paints ( I choose black and tan)
Stain

Procedure:

Using a piece of 1x12, cut 2 pieces of 27" long. In one side of the piece, measure 2" from the edges to inside and mark each points. Measure 5" from the bottom of the piece to the top and draw a semi circle. Connect that semi circle with the points from the edges. Make the same in the next piece. Your bench legs will look like this.

Take another 1x12 board to make the top and the shelf pieces of the table. Measure a piece of 32" from the edge and cut your first piece (this will be the table top) and your shelf will be 28 inches long.

We are ready to make the table. Take your table legs and measured 11 inches since the edge, mark and placed the bottom shelf. Put the piece between legs and secure it with glue and nails. Now, put the table top using the piece of 32 inches. Remember, use glue and nail to secure each piece to give strength to the bench. Look how it looks with all pieces together.

To give support to the new piece attached a piece of wood to the back. Take the 1/4" panel and cut a piece of 29 1/2 " x 16 1/2 " to cover the back of your table. Your back will look like this.

Your piece is now finished....

Round the edges and make sure all sanding has been completed prior to painting. Give the base color and then apply the color you want.

In this piece I used tan over black. The table top will be stain only.

To give a distressed look, use the sander and remove paint in the specific areas to create a worn look. Then apply stain. Now your piece looks worn and old. Primitive perfect!

Love this new piece! I named it Bucket Table but you can used it to display your jugs and crocks if you want.

New GW finds

Hi Prim Girls,

Few weeks ago, I was searching for goodies for my Trashy Swap I did not find what my partner desires. Ultimately, I do not find anything in extremely good condition at the TS and if I find something it had a highest prices that I ever seen for used items. I was talking with Anitza from Victorian Country that is probably that the GW / TS donors are keeping their stuffs for their own Yard and Garage sales and are not donating anything in this season. Do you notice the same at yours?

Well, this week I make a little trip to the GW and TS and these are the pictures of my last finds.

Trashy Swap goodies and other things

Hi Prim girls,

I am back! There are a few weeks since I made my last post but I was helping one of my Best Friends with her moving, painting some furniture pieces and making spring tweaking around my home. I entered in the "Trashy Swap" from Char's Blog, and my partner was Heather from The Rare Den. I received my box and I was really excited thinking in what items I will be found in the swap. Usually, when I entered in a swap I make a little " research", and always read all the blog' posts that my partner had. That is the perfect form to know the "decor taste" of your partner. But in this case we also emailed one each other to know the type of things we loved and had a better idea of what items we need or wants to have in the swap. I love swaps, but my favorite part is the excitement of what are in the box. Do you have the same feeling? Is like a Christmas Day, LOL. Look at the items that she send to me, everything was beautiful on it. Love it! Heather, THANK YOU for be my "Trashy Partner".

As you know, I have two kids but they had a difference of 7 years between them. Both have different interests but when my daughter wants to use her laptop, my 4 yr son wants to used the computer to play at Sprout Online. The problem is not the same computer he uses the desktop but it was in my DD room. Well, I decide to switch their rooms to avoid hear my DD favorite phrase " I want PRIVACY in my room". After a long day from painting and moving things from a room to another and when we almost finish my son's room he asked me if I can go outside his room because "He needs PRIVACY in his new room with his dad because their are men and I was a mom". Yes, you read right, "PRIVACY". I am thinking that this word will be with me for a loooong time, LOL. See pictures of their rooms before...

I want a more colonial look for my DD room,but finally I leave her to decide some fabrics to make her pillows. She picked these fabrics...

I'm not finished with them yet but their rooms looks now like this....

My little brother call me today to tell me that a burglaries entered to his home this morning and stole his house. I am very happy because my loved family, brother, mySIL and my nieces were not there when that occur. Thanks GOD , because their lives are the most important things that they had. But I am extremely sad and furious because they are good people, they work everyday so hard to have a good quality of life for their daughters and to have good things as well. They stole every single electronic item in their house, TV, DVD's computers, electronics games, etc.. I know that is material and they can obtained them again but is so hard for young people with two raising kids . The things that they had did not came in one day, they took years to save money to have what they had and some of them were not enjoyed for at least six month. My niece computer was her Christmas present, is not fair at all. Usually, I am not share things like this but I am very upset this afternoon.

Half Bath Makeover and much more......

Hi prim girls,

As you saw in TV, we had a HUGE snowstorm here in VA, over 25 inches of white and sparkling powder. Beautiful! Well, if we can't moved to other place that our home, and only we can move from one floor to another we decided to started some projects that we had pending since months ago. Do you remember a post that I requested decoration's tips and ideas for my baths, I received awesome ideas from some prim gals that I used in my half bath this weekend. We made a wooden frame around the mirror( adhere to it using liquid nail as Char suggested), painted and sanded the cabinet, to hide the mirrored medicine cabinet we made a wooden door and changed light fixture. Here are the picture of my bath now,

What do you think?????? I really love our bath makeover, it looks better than in pictures.

Also, we finished my dining room, yes... it is finally painted. Last weekend we selected both colors from Valspar, Mercer blue ( it is a beautiful blue-gray color) and Lyndhurst Timber from Natural Trust for Historic Preservation Collection ( it looks like brownish sand). See pictures of it now, with sunlight....

Now, we are in the painting process of our kid's bath, as soon we finish, I will be sharing more pic's with you.

Our First BIG Makeover

Hi prim girls,

During the weekend we had a snowstorm. I love to see the snow falling down to ground, but I hate when we had plans that we need to change. That was occured with us! We are completely bored and we decided to started a makeover, our BIG one. After our moving to this house, we founded that the last homeowner left a baby's chest. We never used it but we didn't discard it due to the piece was wood and had good bones. Perfect for a makeover! Here is the piece before.....

We removed the drawers and reinforced the piece, painted yellow ochre over black, sanded and stained.

Look how that piece looks now and for what we will used it,

I think it looks better now! I love how it turns out and we had a new prim TV cabinet for free. We only spend a few dollars in a wood board for the doors and wooden knobs for the piece. What do you think?

Today is Watcha Working on Wednesdays in Leslie's Blog - My country home. Leslie, I'm so sorry ..I am completely late this year, I missed a month of projects. Last night we received more snow, result ...NO classes today, two kids running, eating and screaming for everything, OMG , peace..... Well, God gave me a break (LOL). They decide to play Wii and I started some bunnies and dolls for my selling blog and baked two cakes using a new recipe ( mmmm, so yummy can't wait eat them) . Here are the pictures....

R.I.P. Morgan Harrington

Hi prim girls,

This is a sadly post. For 3 months now, in the right colum of my blog, I had a link to Find Morgan Harrington, she was the beautiful lady girl that disappeared on October 17, 09 while attending a Metallica concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia. I was so scared and frustated with this abduction, I saw the blog every day to see if they post good news. I am thinking all the time what I do if one of my kids or my nieces goes to a tragedy like that , and I can not imagine how much pain are in her parent's heart. I pray so much for Morgan to returned safe to her home but sadly their body was discovered yesterday. Below is the statement made for her father. Please, make a pray for Morgan and her family .......... Rest in Peace, Morgan, Rest in Peace.....

STATEMENT BY DR. DAN HARRINGTON

"Morgan's mother, Gil, and I are overwhelmingly saddened by yesterday's discovery, but we are also relieved because our questions can now be answered and we can give our daughter a proper burial. We know that because of the good life Morgan led and the love she created for everyone around her, she is now in a safer, better place. We appreciate everyone's respect for our privacy at this difficult time and we thank everyone who has helped us through this tragedy and helped us find Morgan."

Be prepared this is a long post full of pictures....... Probably you are dreaming with a spring or summer temps, if you said yes....continue reading this post. I will give you an eye candy with temps around 80's all year. Today, I will talk about geography(LOL) and one of the US territorries in the Caribbean...... Puerto Rico, my island. I am pretty sure that the most of you know about it, or the name sounds familiar. PR is a little paradise in the Caribbean that you could access by air, in a cruise, obviously if you had your own yacht you can access it too, Ha, ha, ha.

Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a self -governing unincorporated territory of United States located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands. The main island of Puerto Rico is the smallest by land area among the four Greater Antilles, which also include Cuba, Hispaniola and Jamaica. Puerto Rico's head of state is the President of the United States. The island is also popularly known as "La Isla del Encanto", which translated means "The Island of Enchantment." People born in Puerto Rico are US Citizens.PR consists of the main island of Puerto Rico and various smaller islands.

Mostly mountainous with large coastal areas in the north and south. Located in the tropics, Puerto Rico has an average temperature of 82.4 °F (30 °C) throughout the year, temps do not change drastically throughout the seasons. The official languages are Spanish and English with Spanish being the primary language. English is taught as a second language in public and private schools from elementary levels to high school and in universities. Our currency is USD (United States Dollar).

Old San Juan,

On the tip of Old San Juan, (our capital), you'll find Fort San Felipe del Morro, better known as El Morro. Probably the most famous monument from Spanish colonial times, the fortress stands out on a rocky islet, forever a reminder of a different age.

Hi prim girls,
I have a corner cupboard that I bought two years ago in the store of Anitza from Victorian Country, and I want to paint it in a different color. This week we are talking about the color combination that I can used on it, and Anitza send me an ecard from Webshot with a beautiful cupboard and a huge basket above it.

( Sorry for the images but I take pictures from my computer and my CS magazine).Love the picture and the beautiful cupboard is from Earlene's house. She had an amazing prim home, I love her house since I see it in Country Sampler on March 2009. Do you remembered? if not, here CS pic's. Also, this house appear in the "Friends home tours"on Dec 14,09 at Primp your pad.

I was dreaming with a basket like that and yesterday I was at Marshalls and look what I found.

I know that it is not an antique but it is a beautiful reproduction basket, huge with a nice color and I paid a good price for it ( only $14.99 + tax).

I have some projects from 2010, one of them is my bedroom. I want it with a colonial look, and I am buying some things to obtained the decor that I want. My first item was an eternal love coverlet that I bought few weeks ago in Janet's store Winter Willow Primitives . She had awesome items on her store, this is my first item from it but I am sure that it will not be the last. Go to her store, you will not be dissapointed at all. Well, here is my first issue and I need your opinion. I am not sure if I need to change the color of my bed. It is like cooper/brownish iron but I am not sure if I need to paint it in black. What do you think? This pic's will give you and idea how it looks.

Two Makeovers Completed

Hi prim girls,

Although today was a very cold day outside, I decided to complete some makeovers. I had a lot of them waiting for better days, but it seems that we will have a lot of cold days ahead. I can't not wait until Spring to finish them. In my previous post I showed two wooden items that I founded in the GW,well here are the pictures of them now.

New Butter Churn,

Do you remember it, if not here is the picture before. I think it was an umbrella stand but no more...

I removed the yute and replaced it with veneer edging in oak. Make a round cap with a hole in the center to used as a butter churn. Then sanded the piece and painted it barn red over black and stained.

My next project was the bread box,

Now, I used the same color technique of the first item and added a stained wooden knob. I will used it in my bath to hide my creams and other bathroom stuff.

Love to make projects like this and I had more waiting for me. Also, can't wait to see who will be my new partner in the "Trashy Swap" from Char's Blog, it is based in TS finds that we need to change to make a treasure for our partner.

GW Finds and a little bit of snow

Hi prim girls,

Weather Channel shows that we will have some snow showers today with no accumulation. But apparently, they failed and we woke up with this and continuous ..... Love it!!!

But this snow changed all my chores for today, I had plans to start some makeovers of these pieces that I found at the GW. I found this table for $4. 59 including tax.

But the better of it , is this..... It is a flip top table/bench...... Great !

My next find for $4.00 is ........

This prim shelf (love the color), that only need cleaning and a beautiful display on it. It cost me $6.60, not to bad for a beautiful shelf ready to use.

Also, I found some this....

Snowman plate for 50 cents

Tin Candle Holder ( from Irvin's) for 79 cents.

I forgot to show you this a wooden bread box for less than $5 and a set of Santa's from Enesco for $2.19 .
